NC Voters Lock In Photo ID—Undoing It Now Needs 60% and a Vote

NBC News projected that North Carolina voters approved a constitutional amendment requiring photo identification to vote, with about 59.6% in favor and 40.4% against.

In a post on X on Nov. 4, 2026, NBC News said, “North Carolina voters approve Amendment: Require photo ID for all voters.”

What changes

According to Ballotpedia, the North Carolina Constitution will now require voters to present photo identification, including those who do not vote in person.

How hard is it to undo

WRAL reported that rescinding the amendment would require a 60% vote in the legislature and approval from at least 50% of voters statewide.

Where public opinion stands

A 2024 Gallup poll found that 84% of Americans support requiring people to show ID to cast a ballot. CNN’s Harry Enten noted that support included 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans.

The national backdrop

Commentator Steve Cortes wrote on X that “Every Democrat candidate opposes voter ID and the SAVE America Act.”

The Western Journal reported that the GOP-led House passed the SAVE America Act earlier this year, which would have required photo ID to vote in federal races nationwide, but that the Senate has not passed the bill. The outlet also wrote that President Donald Trump called on the Senate to end the filibuster to move the legislation, while noting that some Republicans were not willing to make that change.
