Leo DiCaprio Called Hypocrite For Protesting Trump On Climate Change After This Photo Surfaced

Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio joined hundreds of thousands of Americans in Washington, D.C., for the People’s Climate March on April 29, prompting a number of people on the political right to accuse him of hypocrisy.

Coinciding with President Donald Trump’s 100th day in office, the Climate March was a mass demonstration against his administration’s climate change skepticism. Trump once called climate change a “hoax” that was invented by the Chinese, and has promised to revitalize the American coal industry, The Independent reports.

Shortly after taking office, Trump selected former Oklahoma attorney general and noted climate change skeptic Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency. The administration has since rolled back a number of environmental regulations.

Trump has also revived the controversial Keystone XL pipeline and has indicated that he’s considering pulling out of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to reduce global carbon emissions.

A day before the Climate March, DiCaprio took to Twitter to announce his participation.

“Tomorrow, I march for climate justice and to protect our right to a healthy future,” he wrote. “Join us.”

The tweet was shared over 2,000 times and received more than 8,000 likes, but it was not without its critics.

“Will you be arriving in your private plane or yacht, hypocrite?” one user replied, including an image of DiCaprio hanging out on a yacht in his post.

Another user tweeted: “How much carbon will you be emitting into the atmosphere by flying there?”

This isn’t the first time DiCaprio has been accused of hypocrisy with respect to his environmentalism.

In a Jan. 24 article for the New York Post, climate change skeptic Karol Markowicz called DiCaprio “just another climate hypocrite.”

“One of the Sony emails leaked by hackers last year revealed that DiCaprio took six private flights in six weeks,” Markowicz wrote. “We might not know science, but we know math. A plane for one, taken once a week, hurts the environment far more than what regular people who ‘don’t believe’ in climate change can do.”

On the other hand, Mashable reports that DiCaprio has done important work on behalf of the environment, including helping to produce “Before the Flood,” a 2016 documentary that examines the impact of climate change around the world.

He also presides over a foundation that has raised more than $60 million to “support innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities.”
