Donna Chen was out jogging with her dog, Barney in Sarasota, Florida, when a drunk driver struck her and took her life. Barney fled the scene.
Meanwhile, the police went to Donna’s home to tell them the tragic news. Around the same time, a vet called the family to tell them to come pick up Barney. How Barney got home was a miracle.
Rory O’Conner was kayak-ing that day, about a mile from the accident scene, when he spotted the dog swimming towards him.
O’Conner said, “He was really scared and he was shivering, at first I thought he was cold but then I could tell he was really scared. He had to swim pretty far and he was pretty beat up. His paw was bleeding and he had a bunch of scrapes.”
O’Conner took the dog to shore and then took him to the vet, where they scanned his microchip to find his owner.
If O’Conner hadn’t been out fishing that day, Barney may not have ever made it home. Donna’s family was glad to have him back, they had been through so much, losing Donna so tragically.
