Baby Dies When EMS Medic Refuses to Aid the Infant

EMT in Detroit got a call about a baby that had stopped breathing and they dispatched Ann Marie Thomas. This turned out to be a mistake because Thomas arrived at the scene but parked around the corner. She then contacted dispatch, saying she was not going to go on the call. EMT had to dispatch a second ambulance, who did CPR on the baby and transported the baby to the hospital where it later died. Thomas now faces charges over refusing to give aid and will face one year in prison for it, but the baby got a life sentence.

Thomas was called to an emergency call about a baby who had stopped breathing in Detroit. The 911 dispatcher informed Thomas there was an 8-month-old baby who was struggling to breathe, but Thomas didn’t seem too concerned about saving the life.

“When she arrived, instead of rushing to help save the infant’s life, Thomas parked her emergency vehicle around the corner from the house,” reads a document from the civil suit filed against Thomas.

“Thomas then waited six minutes before telling dispatchers that she didn’t want to help, stating: ‘I’m not about to be on no scene 10 minutes doing CPR, you know how these families get.’”

The dispatcher apparently tried to convince Thomas to help. “I’m going to need you to make that scene. You’re going to have to make patient contact,” they pleaded.

Another ambulance was called to the scene to transport the baby to the hospital, who died in hospital the next morning.

The child’s mother is also being charged with three counts of first degree child abuse and felony murder in connection with her daughter’s death.
