All it takes is a few seconds for your life to change for ever, and in the case of Hashmot Ali, those few seconds meant the difference between a normal life, and life full of isolation and hardship. The worst part? It was to no fault of his own — it was a random, chance occurrence that we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy.
Two decades ago, Ali was going about his day as usual when he had a chance encounter with a tiger, an animal not unusual to see in the area. Unfortunately, their interaction was violent, and with one swipe of his paw, the tiger caused Ali grave and irreversible injury. In a stroke of luck, Ali’s life was spared, but his story forces us to face a somber question: If life is this difficult to endure, is it really a life at all?
Read more about Ali’s story below, but be warned: Some of these images are graphic and difficult to look at.
Hashmot Ali lives in southern Bangladesh.
In this part of the world, tigers are pretty common to see — but rarely do they interact with humans, and even more rarely do they attacked.
To no fault of either party, he was mauled by a tiger. Ali was unsuspecting, and one has to assume that for whatever reason, the tiger was following his natural instincts to pounce.
The tiger tore a big chunk of skin and flesh off his face. Ali recalls screaming loudly when it happened, drawing the attention of fishermen nearby.
His screams and the interference from the fishermen were able to scare the tiger away.
They made loud sounds with their paddles and the tiger ran off, but it wasn’t before some serious damage was done.
Ali was rushed to the hospital.
Miraculously, the doctors there were able to save his life. However, they could ‘t save his face, which was irreversibly disfigured.
For the last 20 years, Ali has kept his face hidden.
The disfigurement has changed his life in more ways than one: People treat him differently, sometimes even humiliating him. It’s caused him to have social anxiety, preferring to stay inside the house most of the time.
Ali tries to live a normal life, but it’s proven to be difficult.
He worries that his face will affect his children’s abilities to find partners, and he also is completely ostracized from his community. One day, he hopes to have plastic surgery — provided he can get the funding.
It’s a tragic story to say the least, and it’s also a reminder that in one instant, your entire life can change. We wish Ali the best, and hope he soon gets the help he needs.
