President Donald Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement, according to multiple news reports.
Officials who were not named told CBS and Axios early Wednesday that Trump has made the decision to withdraw.
Sources said neither the timetable nor the mechanics of how Trump would disengage the U.S. from the treaty were clear as of Wednesday morning.
As a candidate, Trump vowed to pull out of the accord. Former President Barack Obama had considered aligning the U.S. with the Paris treaty, which he did last year, one of the major accomplishments of his presidency.
The Trump campaign’s energy plan said that as president, Trump would “cancel the Paris climate agreement and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to UN global warming programs.”
Word of Trump’s decision brought a variety of reactions on Twitter.
