Patriot Brief
- What Happened: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the SAVE Act "Jim Crow 2.0" and vowed Democrats will block it despite 71% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans supporting voter ID.
- Why It Matters: Schumer claims requiring proof of citizenship discriminates against women who changed their names and people who cannot find birth certificates.
- Bottom Line: The Senate Democrat leader promised the bill will not get a single Democratic vote and declared they are "not reviving Jim Crow."
Chuck Schumer just told 71 percent of Democrats and 95 percent of Republicans that they support racism.
The Senate Minority Leader appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Thursday and called the SAVE Act "Jim Crow 2.0" because it requires proof of U.S. citizenship to vote. He vowed that Democrats will block the bill and refuse to give it a single vote in the Senate.
Co-host Jonathan Lemire pointed out that a new Pew Research poll shows 95 percent of Republicans and 71 percent of Democrats support requiring ID to prove citizenship before voting. He asked Schumer why he opposes something so overwhelmingly popular.
Schumer did not hesitate. "It's Jim Crow 2.0, and I called it Jim Crow 2.0, and the right wing went nuts all over the Internet," he said. "That's because they know it's true."
Let that sink in. Schumer just compared voter ID to the brutal segregation laws that oppressed Black Americans for decades. He thinks asking people to prove they are citizens before casting a ballot is the same thing as poll taxes and literacy tests designed to keep people from voting.
This is delusional. And it is insulting.
Schumer went on to claim that requiring citizenship verification discriminates against women who got married and changed their last names. "If you change your last name, you won't be able to show ID and you'll be discriminated against," he said.
That is a lie. Women who change their names update their IDs all the time. It is a normal process that millions of Americans go through every single year. Schumer is pretending that updating an ID is some impossible burden to justify letting non-citizens vote.
He also claimed that people who cannot find a birth certificate or proper ID will be discriminated against. "This is vicious and nasty," Schumer said.
No, Chuck. What is vicious and nasty is allowing illegal immigrants to vote in American elections. What is vicious and nasty is pretending that asking for ID is racist when every other country on the planet does it. What is vicious and nasty is lying to the American people about election integrity so you can keep exploiting the system.
Schumer ended with a threat. "I said to our Republican colleagues, it will not pass the Senate. You will not get a single Democratic vote in the Senate. We're not reviving Jim Crow all over the country."
There it is. Democrats are going to block a bill supported by 71 percent of their own voters because Chuck Schumer thinks verifying citizenship is racist.
This is why Americans do not trust Democrats on election integrity. They scream about threats to democracy while refusing to secure elections. They call common sense voter ID laws Jim Crow while fighting to let non-citizens vote.
Schumer can block the SAVE Act all he wants. But Americans know what is really going on. And they are not buying his lies anymore.
