Walmart is trying to identify an Arkansas woman who hurled racial insults at other customers. The incident occurred on May 22 at a Walmart. A woman was caught on video telling a customer to “go back to Mexico” and called another customer a “n*gger,” CNN reported. The video was shared on Facebook by Eva Hicks and quickly went viral. It was viewed more than 21 million times and shared more than 288,000 times in just three days.
“I never in my life thought this would happen to me. Yes me,” Hicks captioned the video. “Just on a simple trip to the grocery store after a hard day of work. I love this country and I will stay in this country. Friends please share.”
Hicks, a mother of three, told CNN she politely asked the woman to step to one side so that she could reach for her medicine. That’s when the woman became aggressive. “She moved back her cart and immediately started saying that people bother her on every aisle, and started saying more hateful things to me,” Hicks told CNN.
The woman then told Hicks to “go back to Mexico.” When another customer came to the defense of Hicks, the woman is heard responding, “A n*gger’s calling me ignorant?”
“It’s not your country, we don’t want you here,” the woman is heard telling Hicks in the video. “I have never experienced anything like that in my life,” Hicks said. “Nobody has ever talked to me like that, I felt very insulted and unwanted.” Hicks said she has been living in the United States for more than 30 years. She said she is originally from Mexico City.
“I am an American citizen, I consider this home,” Hicks said. “I am not going to leave, I am going to stay here, I am not going to shut up, I am going to speak up. I have seen a lot of these incidents lately, I believe ever since the Trump administration came into power, he can say hateful things to other races and other countries, these people think it’s okay for them to do the same.”
Walmart has issued a statement on the incident. “We value and respect everyone who visits our stores,” the statement read. “We have no tolerance for the language or actions of this customer and our proud that our assistant manager responded appropriately by asking her to leave the store.”
A Walmart spokesperson also told CNN that they are working to identify the woman and that “once identified we will ask she no longer shops at our stores.”
Meanwhile, Hicks said she will be meeting with the woman who came to her defense at the store.
“I don’t know her, I am supposed to meet her today,” Hicks said. “I want to meet her to say thank you and just give her a hug.”
