A soccer game in Oxnard, California, and a massive brawl broke out over a “bad” referee call. A 29-year-old player was beaten so badly by the opposing team and their fans that he died.
The incident happened on the morning of July 10. Misael Sanchez got up and ready to play soccer, never realizing that game would end his life. The Oxnard Police said he died on Monday morning, 15 days after the on-field brawl. An autopsy was performed, but they have not made his official cause of death public.
Police said they did not see clear injuries on the victim when they first arrived, so they needed the autopsy results to charge people with a crime.
TMZ reported:
A soccer player tragically died weeks after multiple people brutally attacked him on the pitch during a soccer match in Oxnard, California, earlier this month.
The man was only 29.
According to the NY Post, the brawl happened around 11 AM on July 10th at Oxnard High School — about 90 minutes west of downtown Los Angeles — when Misael Sanchez was allegedly beaten by opposing players and spectators after a dispute over a referee’s call.
The assault left Sanchez severely injured and unresponsive on the field. EMT took him to a local hospital, the Ventura County Medical Center. Sadly, 15 days later, the family announced Sanchez had died. The cause of death will be determined during an autopsy.
Multiple people attacked this young man, and police are still looking for them. As of now, they have one 46-year-old man in custody.
Witnesses told police that “the fight was between two adult soccer teams,” and the fight occurred when the two teams disagreed with a referee’s decision. When the fight broke out, Sanchez was on the field playing soccer for one of the two teams. During the fight, Sanchez was assaulted by multiple assailants, according to witnesses.
Witnesses identified the 46-year-old man as “one of the assailants”; he was arrested for his alleged connection to Sanchez’s injuries. Police said he was trying to leave the scene when he was detained. He was taken in on suspicion of felony battery.
Very sad story.
