You may ask, why would anyone be angry about a cool trick like this? Well, the answer is quite simple and it all has to do with the humble Manatee. Manatees are an endangered species, and if you have never gotten the chance to see them up close, they are very gentle and quite friendly. While the video below seems like it’s all in good fun, the truth is the man was actually disturbing the Manatees in their natural habitat which is so many are furious about it.
According to The Mirror:
Footage of a smiling man apparently throwing water from his boat into a river is set to land him in extremely hot water – for allegedly harassing an endangered species of animal.
The video, posted online under the headline “Would you swim in this river?”, appears to show Scott McCormick chucking a bucket of water from his vessel into St John’s River in Florida, US.
The river nearby then seems to erupt. Mr. McCormick has since been slammed by social media users after it was claimed the disturbance was actually a gathering of manatees. In a caption posted alongside the ViralHog video, Mr. McCormick’s wife, Maria, wrote: “My husband was bailing water out of our boat after a huge storm.
“Every time he threw the water we saw splashes in the water.”
“I happened to be recording on one of the tosses and we saw huge splashes of water everywhere. We both looked at each other and said ‘I will never swim in there again!’”
The video caused outrage on social media, as people condemned Mr. McCormick for apparently harassing the manatees. One Facebook user claimed that Mr. McCormick knew what he was doing, posting: “These are not alligators. These are not river monsters. These are our Florida Manatee.
“The only river monster in the video that he has posted is Scott McCormick.”
Now that you know the whole story, what do you think? Was the man really causing that much damage or are people getting all up in arms over nothing? Either way, I don’t think he will ever record himself doing that again. Social media can destroy people if they are not careful. The moral of the story, don’t be an idiot.
