On Monday, Elon Musk, a multibillionaire businessman, suggested legalizing fentanyl as a potential strategy for reducing or eliminating the numerous drug overdoses it has been linked to.
Musk’s remark was triggered by an image of a woman who looks to be saying, “Most fentanyl sellers… are trying to survive under the same destructive, racist system that replaced opium with morphine, then heroin, then fentanyl: the War on Drugs.”
Musk continued by labeling alcohol “a legacy drug from olden times when we had no technology,” using the unsuccessful 1920s prohibition of alcohol as a reason for ending the so-called war on drugs.
“The United States’ alcohol prohibition led to the biggest rise in organized crime in our history. How many times do we need to be reminded of this lesson?!” said Musk. In response, one user stated that while he “used to” support ending the drug war, he now believes that the experiment has already failed due to San Francisco, California.
He claims that the city of San Francisco, where all narcotics are technically legal, is the ideal test case for this. Look where it’s gotten us, I say.
San Francisco is well-known for its lax drug laws. The mayor of San Francisco declared a state of emergency in the Tenderloin neighborhood, where there are approximately 25,000 drug users, due to an increase in drug-related mortality and violent crime in 2021.

According to reports, there were “10-20 situations a day” involving drug-related crimes or fatalities in the city last year. Captain Michael Mason of the San Francisco Fire Department called it an “epidemic.” The most dangerous drug available is fentanyl. According to reports, the dangerous substance kills 150 Americans each day.
