A man went on a surprise attack with a meat cleaver in a Walmart store, killing two and injuring another nine. Panicked shoppers headed for the door after the attack began. Police are holding an unemployed man in the attack but say they still don’t have a motive,
The attack is said to have occurred at a Walmart store in Bao’an district, Shenzhen, a manufacturing hub in southern China.
According to accounts, the suspect started attacking shoppers on the second floor between 9pm and 10pm, reported local newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily.
One video clip online shows screaming shoppers running towards the exit of the store while another shows the blood-stained floor of the store after the rampage.
A third clip appeared to show a man, in white top, running outside building with a cleaver in hand.
However, the police have not commented on whether or not he was the suspect.
Victims were immediately sent to the Hengshen Hospital and Bao’an Central Hospital for treatment, the report said.
It also stated that officials from the local authority arrived at the scene shortly afterwards to direct the rescue operation.
The Shenzhen Public Security Bureau confirmed that two people had been killed and nine others had been injured as the result of the assault.
Further police investigation is underway.
Walmart, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, has been operating in China for more than 20 years.
It had 439 stores in 189 Chinese cities by the end of 2016.
