During a speech in which he was supposed to be speaking on school choice in Cleveland, Ohio, Donald Trump made the claim that if he would’ve been president, the Sept, 11, 2001 terror attacks never would’ve happened because he would’ve captured Osama bin Laden before the attack would’ve occurred.
“I would’ve been tougher on terrorism. Bin Laden would’ve been caught a long time ago, before he was ultimately caught, prior to the downing of the World Trade Center,” Trump said during an aside about his record on Iraq.
Trump continued by saying that if he would have been in Congress, he would have voted against the invasion.
He also made the claim that he has given statements “much closer” to the invasion of Iraq, saying he was against the war. Trump said those statements “superseded” his earlier, much-cited interview when Trump said he did support the invasion while on the air with radio host Howard Stern.
