A video surveillance camera caught three armed robbers in their failed attempt rob a homeowner, who fought back using a machete against one of the attackers wielding a shotgun.
Armed men tried to rob a home this week in Sarasota County, but were arrested after one of the victims grabbed a machete and fought back, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office reports. The incident was captured on security video.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, three masked men armed with a shotgun, crowbar and machete jumped the fence of a home in the 2100 block of Dodge Avenue after 4 a.m. on Thursday. One of the victims, Leandro Mojena-Peralta, 38, said the robbers told him and another victim to get on the ground. Instead, he went into his home, grabbed a machete and fought back. He was able to take the shotgun from one of the robbers, later identified as Alen Beltran-Vazquez, 32, of Greenacres, and hold him until deputies arrived. The other two robbers dropped their weapons and fled.
The other suspects were arrested after the suspect vehicle was located at a gas station. Sheriff’s officials say four men wearing dark clothing were inside — one with several zip ties. They were identified as Angel Cabrera-Basulto, 19, of Lake Worth and Ronier Jauregui-Lorente, 21, of West Palm Beach, the two admitted to the attempted robbery.
Detectives identified Jorge Valido-Leyva and Roberto Salcedo-Balanza as the other men in the vehicle and through interviews, learned that they helped coordinate and plan the robbery.
All five men are in custody at the Sarasota County Jail without bond.
Beltran-Vazquez is charged with two counts of armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jauregui-Lorente and Cabrera-Basulto are each charged with two counts of armed robbery. Valido-Leyva and Salcedo-Balanza face two counts each of principal to armed robbery.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
