Local authorities in Florida said that a 23-year-old man lost his arm at the beginning of the week after being attacked by an alligator near Port Charlotte.

Around one in the morning on Sunday, Jordan Rivera was attacked by a nearly 11-foot alligator near a pond not far from the Banditos Bar. The alligator was later shot and killed.

According to CBS News, due to the severity of his injuries, Rivera had to have his arm amputated at Gulf Coast Medical Center after being transported there by helicopter.

According to The Daily Sun, when a patron inside the pub heard the attack taking place outside, he acted quickly and assisted in pulling Rivera out of the water.

“He was yelling and swimming toward the shoreline,” Hidalgo said. “I ran and dragged him up onto the sand. I was scared to get close to the water because it was dark out.”

“I was scared for sure,” he said. “He was a pretty big guy. I’m not sure how I did it. I guess my adrenaline kicked in … I don’t know if it was a mama gator trying to save her young, or a daddy gator trying to feed his family … but the guy was very lucky.”

“I didn’t lose my life, I lost an arm, it’s not the end of the world,” Rivera told a news outlet.

Alligators are still freely accessible throughout the state of Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, despite being listed as an endangered species by the federal government.

“Alligators occur in all 67 counties in Florida and can be found in practically all fresh and brackish water bodies and occasionally in salt water,” the state agency said. “Although exact population figures are not known, Florida has a healthy and stable population of about 1.3 million alligators of every size. This population estimate is based on an estimated 6.7 million acres of suitable habitat.”

It is forbidden to feed alligators since doing so makes them lose their fear of people and teaches them to link food with people. Despite their abundance in the state, assaults on humans are still very uncommon because they only go after easy food.

American alligators can reach lengths of 15 feet and weights of 1,000 pounds when fully grown.

Less than 450 alligator assaults in Florida have been documented since 1948, with a few dozen of those ending in fatalities.
