You have to have nerves of steel to be a 911 operator. Your whole day on the job the potential for meeting people at the absolute worst moment of their lives is very high.

911 being an emergency line you don’t exactly get people calling you asking how to cook a turkey like the folks at the Butterball line do.

Anyway, people have varying degrees of what an emergency is and tend to call 911 accordingly. If you cut your finger you don’t call 911, but if you hit an artery you might.

If you are a little kid that line is blurred a little bit more because to be honest the adults haven’t explained all of the rules yet.

Now, I remember when I was in the 4th grade there was this math section in school that I was having such a hard time with that I thought I was never going to get. I called my mom at work and asked her what to do. She actually got the company accountant to come down and help me learn this new multiplication thing that we were doing.

False or prank calls come through from time to time. These keep operators from answering more important emergency calls that need to be attended to.

When one kid in Lafayette, Indiana called 911, his problem wasn’t quite dire enough to be considered an emergency, but it wasn’t a prank call either.

Lafayette Indiana Police Department released a tweet of the audio recording between dispatcher Antonia Bundy and the child.

“Hi, um, can you hear me?” the boy begins. Bundy responds that she can. As the conversation continues, it sounds as if the boy is hesitant, already feeling bad for making the call.

But Bundy remains forever gracious. The caller explains that he had a bad day. His tone sounds discouraged and frustrated.

Anyone who has ever had difficulties with math homework can relate. Fractions are the worst and this child felt bogged down by it all.

“I just have tons of homework,” he says. Rather than send the child on his way, Bundy offers to help him solve a problem.
