Remember when we were taught that sausages and burgers that weren’t actually burgers were the newest and greatest in fast food?
There seemed to be a new innovative approach to producing meat-based items without using meat every week between the end of the 2010s and the beginning of the 2020s. Really, a number of businesses vowed, these quinoa and fermented tofu patties taste exactly like Angus beef. And the press supported it.
There was, however, a small issue. The public was busy doing something else, namely not buying it, at least if they weren’t already doing so, while the media were busy purchasing it.
In light of the fact that the hoopla didn’t transfer into sales, the British vegan meat manufacturer Heck — yeah, that’s their name — said it is discontinuing almost all of their animal-free sausages.
The Yorkshire-based Heck stated it was cutting back on its selection of vegan sausages (or “bangers” if you’re a Britisher) from 15 to two, according to a report in the U.K. Telegraph earlier this month. The company co-founder claimed that the market “wasn’t quite ready” to embrace them.

What? Bill Gates’ recommendation that the industrialized world switch en masse to synthetic beef wasn’t implemented. I’ll tell you, I’m shocked. astonished beyond belief.
As is Andrew Keeble, co-founder of Heck, despite having a little more at stake. At the very least, his acknowledgment of why the vegan bangers failed is brutally honest.
“We had a huge range of vegan products, because like everyone else, we believed what was being written in the press,” Keeble said. “If you look at the massive sort of Silicon Valley valuations out there, people were investing in vegan brands, and they didn’t want to miss the next Google.”
Except, from the looks of things, the vegan meat-substitute market is mostly made up of MySpaces and BuzzFeeds.
“The vegan market is really funny. We actually had some amazing products out there that were very functional, very good for your gut — [such as] one with quinoa and beetroot in it,” Keeble said.
“But the public somehow wasn’t quite ready for it yet. They didn’t want all that veg in the sausage.”
Before hopping on the vegan-meat bandwagon, it might have been a good idea to do some research first. According to data cited by the Telegraph, sales of the supposedly disgusting quinoa/beetroot not-really-sausage and other meatless products fell by an astounding £37.3 million ($46.3 million) in the year ending September 10, 2022.
In the six months before March 20 in five of the largest grocery chains in the U.K.—Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and Waitrose—vegan meat sales also fell by about 11%.
Keeble remains hopeful: “We’re still committed to vegan. I think in time, as the market settles down and develops, I think the lovely quinoa, beautiful sausages will come back.
“I think that’s what people really want. I don’t think they really want false meat. But the market is not that developed yet.”
“If you look at the cost of living crisis at the moment, I’m sort of hoping … that sausages are a really good place to be because they’re not an expensive meal,” Keeble said.
“Our typical pack of sausages now, as of last week, was about £3.20, up to £3.40. If you have that with a couple of baked potatoes or a can of beans, it’s still really, really cheap. It’s half the price of a McDonald’s.”
Ah, yes. McDonald’s. Let’s have a conversation with them for a while because, as the English weather is inclined to do, Mr. Keeble’s optimistic Pollyanna procession is going to get severely rained on by their experience with plant-based burgers.
Even though it is a significant player by U.K. standards, Beyond Meat is the market leader in plant-based meat alternatives.
According to CNBC, McDonald’s and Beyond Meat have agreed to introduce a plant-based burger in 600 of its stores starting in 2021. The McPlant was phased out less than a year later because, and I know you won’t believe this, McDonald’s customers aren’t interested in a burger that isn’t actually a burger.
The 28th of July 2022 saw the announcement of that. By July 29, 2022, the price of Beyond Meat’s stock had already dropped from a peak of $194.95 reached in October 2020. It was worth $10.85 as of Monday, a decline of almost 95%.
Beyond Meat started laying off employees in October of last year and also revealed the departure of three executives. Even if you shouldn’t judge a firm by the price of its shares, it’s important to note that none of this appears to have been very helpful.
The Telegraph questioned what had happened with the meat-substitute bubble in a column last June, long before Heck’s fortunes went to crap and while Beyond Meat’s problems were only starting to become apparent.
Cost and production scaling challenges were just two of the pressing problems the business was facing, especially given that food inflation was a serious problem.

However, one seemed to stand out above the rest:
“Finally, it didn’t deliver any real benefits. Most vegetarians are perfectly happy to stop eating meat, and don’t need faux burgers to placate them. The carnivores might have tried it once or twice but quickly lost interest especially as it became more expensive. Meanwhile, there was no real evidence that plant burgers and fake chicken were healthier or had fewer calories. Apart from a vague appeal to a consumer’s morality, it does not have a lot going for it.”
Oh. And they have terrible flavor. Also, that.
Fortunately, Heck does genuinely sell real meat that you can purchase. I’ll assume it’s at least acceptable. They can go to hell, though, if they try to get us to eat more of those quinoa bangers through guilt trips and self-delusion about how delicious they are.
