Pope Francis, the Vicar of Christ, wants to let all of you “Dog Moms” know that owning a dog does not automatically make you a mother.
Despite the fact that dogs have been domesticated for 30,000 years, it has become fashionable for women of all ages in the West to spoil their animals excessively and take great pride in doing so. Some even go as far as to treat their pets like actual children and refer to themselves as “moms” because they are now responsible for caring for a man’s best friend.
The pope made his remarks on Friday while speaking with the extraordinary Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy. Francis offered two tales to illustrate how Europe’s declining birthrates are affecting the continent during their discussion.

“Two weeks ago, my secretary was in the square and a mother came in with a child’s [stroller’],” he explained, “A tender priest approached to bless the child … It was a little dog!”
Then, he shared another story. “At the Ash Wednesday audience, I was saying goodbye, and I arrived in front of a woman, more or less 50 years old … I greet the lady, and she opens a bag, and says, ‘Bless my child!’ A little dog!”
Francis, who was occasionally regarded as having a short fuse, had had enough.
“I didn’t have patience, and I scolded the lady. ‘Madam, so many children are hungry, and you with this little dog!’”

It’s about time somebody smacked these “dog moms” down.
You recognize them; they frequently post pictures of their dog on Instagram, usually a Goldendoodle, French Bulldog, or Corgi. These women pet it, care for it, and compliment themselves for providing the best possible care for their four-legged companion. Even hashtags are made specifically for their furry buddies.
You probably won’t be invited to their dog’s first birthday party if you ever point out that owning a pet does not make them a mother, which might be a good thing.

While millions of Westerners spend thousands on pets each year, as the pope highlighted, children are going hungry all over the world.
In the end, Francis basically said, “Have kids, not pets.” He deserves God’s blessing for that rebuke.
