A diver appeared to stand no chance as an eight-foot long man-eating shark appeared from ‘nowhere’ to take a chunk out of a diver ‘s leg. Parker Simpson, who was filming underwater while spearfishing in the Florida Keys at the time, was left floundering as the giant beast attacks.
Incredibly his ‘dive buddy’ Justyn realizes quickly what is going on and swims to his assistance – managing to shove a speargun in the man-eater’s mouth to try to fend him off.
Thankfully, despite the shark tearing through Parker’s skin, fat tissue, muscle, muscle sheath and tibial artery – and him losing more than a litre of blood – he has lived to tell the tale.
He says he is lucky he ‘got to keep his leg’ after needing more than three hours surgery and 56 stitches to the wound – but is now crowdfunding to help pay for his medical bills.
Posting the footage to YouTube, Parker explains how he had been diving to depths of about 50ft when he surfaced with his catch (a grouper fish) and the shark suddenly came at him.
The film shows the shark move in first on Justyn before turning to Parker – biting first his left fin and then his right. The beast then takes a chunk out of Parker’s leg – leaving a deep bloody and his skin flailing – as he tries to fend it off while screaming to Justyn and a nearby boat for help.
Parker explained: “We were spearfishing near Middle Sambo reef off Boca Chica in the Keys on Sunday when this shark came out of nowhere.
“He first went at my dive buddy Justyn but immediately turned toward me.
“He first bit my left fin then took a chunk out of the right one before biting my leg and cutting the speargun line.
