A 19-year-old migrant allegedly dragged a 90-year-old woman into a church courtyard in Germany and violently raped her while he asked for money.
According to the Daily Mail, the 19-year-old Spanish-Moroccan migrant, identified only as Souhayl M, was charged with and admitted to theft, bodily harm and rape after the attack.
Prosecutors say that the young man confronted the elderly woman in St. Lambertus Church in Dusseldorf, Germany, and shouted, “Money, money!” at her prior to the attack.
When the woman told him that she did not have any money, he dragged her out of the church, into the courtyard, and raped her before pulling her hair and strangling her.
According to The Sun, the man also told the woman: “Keep silent, or death.”
Police tracked down Souhayl using DNA evidence to match with a sample on record from a robbery in May 2016.
According to RT, the 90-year-old woman survived the attack but was hospitalized afterward.
During his appearance before the Dusseldorf District Court on March 16, Souhayl admitted to the crime, saying that he was under the influence of drugs when the incident took place.
“When I got home, I could not believe what had happened,” the defendant said in a statement in court.
Souhayl said that he had a combination of cocaine, alcohol and ketamine in his system prior to the attack. He said that he only planned to commit a robbery, not a rape. The judge in the case pointed out, however, that Souhayl had a previous cause of sexual assault on his record in Spain, which the 19-year-old denied.
According to RT, Souhayl has a history of petty crime and fleeing from authorities. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 in order to join the Latin Kings, a U.S.-based street gang. He fled Spain in 2016 after being arrested several times in the country and facing potential jail time.
Souhayl became known to police in Germany following a number of small thefts and shoplifting incidents.
According to The Sun, Souhayl has also been charged with stealing 30 euros from a woman at a nightclub. Because he admitted to the charges of rape, theft and bodily harm against the elderly woman, he faces up to 15 years in prison when his trial resumes.
The trial will continue on March 27.
