Teen Burglar’s Grandpa: He “Did Not Deserve To Die”, Homeowner Shouldn’t Have Used AR-15

The grandfather of a dead teenage robber criticized an Oklahoma man for using an AR-15 to defend himself against the group of burglars Friday.

Leroy Schumacher, the grandfather, said there was no reason his grandson had to die over the attempted robbery, reports KTUL.

“What these three boys did was stupid,” Schumacher told KTUL. “They knew they could be punished for it but they did not deserve to die.”

Jacob Redfearn, his grandson, and two other teens, Maxwell Cook and Jake Woodruff , were fatally shot by Zach Peters when they tried to break into Peters’ home on March 27. Armed with an AR-15, Peters shot all three of the would-be robbers.

Wagoner County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene to find all three dead teenagers. Police recovered a knife and brass knuckles on the bodies.

Schumacher said it was unfair for Peters to shoot at the robbers because they only had brass knuckles on them. “Brass knuckles against an AR-15, come on, who was afraid for their life,” Schumacher continued.

Schumacher protested that Peters hasn’t been charged for shooting at his grandson and the other potential burglars. Schumacher believes people have a right to protect their homes, but they shouldn’t kill people who break into them.

“There’s got to be a limit to that law, I mean he shot all three of them; there was no need for that,” Schumacher said. “These boys’ families are going to suffer with this for the rest of their lives. We have to live with this for the rest of our lives”

Deputies said the shooting looks like it was in self-defense, but they will be investigating just to be sure.

“It looks like self-defense from the preliminary investigation, but that’s all speculative,” Wagoner County Deputy Nick Mahoney said. “There’s some speculation as to whether or not that (Stand Your Ground) law applies in this case, the simple answer is I don’t know.”

  • Let’s see…3 against one. One with a knife, which is a deadly weapon! Another with brass knuckles, which can also be a deadly weapon, and are also illegal in most states! Yes, they all definitely deserved to die. Perhaps tis will make other moronic criminals think twice about committing break-ins and burglaries…but probably not…because they are too stupid! I just hope that none of them had kids yet, as they deserve Darwin awards!

  • YUP, TOO BAD THEY ARE DEAD, BUT HAD YOU BEEN A BETTER FATHER? GRANDFATHER THEY WOULD BE ALIVE TODAYU! SO QUITE YOUR CRYING AS YOU FAILED THEM AS WELL!

  • It is irrelevant what the three were carrying.. Take a person by surprise and hit them just right, or enough times with brass knuckles it can be fatal.. Knowing that enough people will defend their home/property with a firearm should deter all but the very brain dead. While there is now sadness in three families these three brought their fate upon themselves.. As an armed home owner if I see three persons coming at me my first recognition is I am now outnumbered not heir age or color, all I see is three. Even if I cannot immediately see a weapon , in my own instinct for survival, I must assume that secreted in their clothing is a weapon and they are willing to use it. Would the outcry over this outcome be any different if it was not an AR that was used but instead, say a Glock?? I think not! While I sympathize with the three families for their loss I must also feel the same for the victim who now suffers a life sentence remembering the outcome of his action. There are no winners in this situation, just all losers.!! GOD Bless America aka Lord Robert
