The internet is abuzz over former first lady Michelle Obama’s facial expression after incoming first lady Melania Trump handed her a gift.

Cameras showed Melania handing Michelle a large Tiffany & Co. gift box as Michelle responds somewhat oddly, BuzzFeed reports. The video shows an unsmiling Michelle with eyes quickly darting around, likely looking for a place to put the gift. It’s an expression that has sent people into a frenzy trying to interpret her relative lack of enthusiasm. 

“Michelle Obama is not impressed by Melania Trump’s gift giving ability,” remarked one amused Twitter user in response to ABC’s tweet about the gift. “Michelle having to act grateful for the weak as f*** gift Melania handed to her,” another chimed in.

“Did she steal it from Michelle?” another joked, referring to the time when Melania was accused of plagiarizing one of Michelle’s speeches during the Republican National Committee convention.

Others described the exchange and response as “awkward,” while some were far less amused and more angered by Michelle’s response.

“If its considered class to basically ignore a gift & get it out of your hands as quickly as possible,” one woman said. “That lady needs a lesson in etiquette!”

In contrast, many praised both women for their “class.”

“Melania brought gift for Michelle Obama.. Wonderful gesture,” one person tweeted. “Hope her husband does that for fellow Americans with thoughtful decisions.”

“Melania is so sweet to bring Michelle a Tiffany gift,” another agreed. “Such classy ladies!!”

So far, it’s not clear what was in that box.

“The White House has been a patron of the house of Tiffany & Co. since Abraham Lincoln,” vaguely explained Nathan Strauss, Tiffany & Co. director of corporate communications, to The New York Times.

It’s not the first time Michelle and Melania have exchanged niceties.

The two met shortly after Trump won the 2016 presidential election and seemed to get along well, The Independent reports.

“[Michelle] was a gracious host,” recalled Melania. “We had a great time and we talked about raising children in the White House. She was very warm and very nice.”
