Pregnant Teen Is Arrested When Police Discover What She Wrote On Medicaid Application

Mekenzie Leigh Guffey of Hollywood, Alabama, has been charged with rape after she revealed on a Medicaid application that the father of her unborn child is a 14-year-old boy.

Guffey, who is 19-years-old, told police that she had sex with the boy multiple times in her car. The two met when a mutual friend introduced them at a McDonald’s in December 2016.

“She was proud of him being the father until she found out we were going to become involved,” Hollywood Police Chief Jason Hepler told AL.com. “She told us she didn’t count but it was more than a few times that they were together.”

The Times Free Press reports that the boy’s parents reportedly allowed Guffey to stay at their house for several weeks.

Guffey, who is now five or six weeks pregnant, faces a host of charges, including second-degree rape, second-degree sex abuse, enticing a child for immoral purposes, traveling to meet a child for unlawful sex acts, possession of child pornography and dissemination of child pornography.

The child pornography charges are the result of a video reportedly found on Guffey’s cellphone that showed the 14-year-old boy naked. Because she sent the image to the boy’s phone, police added the dissemination charge.

Guffey was released from Jackson County Jail on March 13 on $25,300 bail.

The Department of Human Resources and the local police opened an investigation into Guffey after she revealed the boy’s identity on the Medicaid application. They are also investigating what role the boy’s parents played in the unlawful relationship.

Before her arrest, Guffey posted about her pregnancy on her Facebook page, describing herself as a “soon to be mommy” and uploading an image of a positive pregnancy test. Her page has since become the site of a heated debate over her criminal case.

“She was bragging to everybody that she was pregnant by this boy,” Hepler said. “She thought it was greatest thing, and then she found out we were involved and it was like, ‘Oh, no.'”

In Alabama, second-degree rape is a Class B felony that occurs when a child under the age of 16 has sexual relations with an adult who is more than two years older. If found guilty, Guffey faces between two and 20 years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines. She would also have to register as a sex offender.

She is scheduled to appear in court on April 19.
