What is our fascination with disturbing videos and images? Is the internet to blame for our sick obsessions, or has it only made it worse? As gross as it is, people cannot help but be fascinated with medical procedures, especially cyst and pimple popping. Heck, there is even a YouTube channel devoted solely for the purpose of distributing these disturbing videos. Now things have gone even further and it’s not enough to just record these while they take place, but now we have decided to put them under a microscope to see it up close and personal. If you don’t understand the fascination with pimple popping videos, look away now – especially if you’re eating. But if you’re one of those people who can spend hours trawling YouTube for the latest satisfying clip of a cyst being extracted from a man’s back, then you’re in for a treat.

Online channels like that of Dr Pimple Popper can rack up millions of views within days. In fact, one of her clips – entitled ‘blackhead goldmine’ – has been watched more than 22million times. Some people have taken the obsession with blackhead removal videos a bit further and filmed them under a microscope.

There’s something strangely hypnotic about it. And people are aware it’s not the most normal thing to be doing. One comment on a magnified blackhead removal video said: “I think I’m on the weird side of YouTube.”

If that doesn’t gross you out then you are a braver person than I am. After watching that video I don’t think I am very hungry anymore.
