A 12-year-old girl was shot in the head early Sunday during a sleepover at Lackawanna neighborhood.
Ramya Eunice is now listed in critical condition after she was shot in the head by an 11-year-old boy just before 2 a.m. in the 100 block of Willow Branch Avenue.
Officers responded to the home and found the 12 year old girl lying on the couch with a friend holding a blanket on the wound on the left side of her head.
The girl was a visitor at the home when one of eight children held a sleepover there for the homeowner’s daughter’s birthday.
The homeowner said the incident was an accident. According to reports, Ramya was sleeping on the couch when she was grazed by a bullet that had been shot through it and a living room wall, according to different news reports. The girl’s mother, who lived nearby, was notified after the shooting incident, the Sheriff’s Office said.
An 11-year-old boy, the homeowner’s nephew, was the one responsible for shooting the victim. It was also reiterated that the boy is suffering from a mental illness and is now undergoing a 72-hour mental therapy.
According to the investigations, local authorities reported that the 41-year-old host said the gun was taken from a vacant neighboring home and that Ramya is currently on a life support.
Local police initially said the girl’s injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening.
On Monday afternoon, the family who living in the home appeared to be moving out. Witnesses say they were seen filling the back of a pickup truck with personal belongings.
Neighbors said by Monday there were differrent stories rounding the neighborhood about what really happened.
Some also say the house where the incident happened is known for some past domestic problems.
This is a lesson to all adults to keep guns away from children and keep it locked, unloaded and separate from ammunition.
Ramya is currently not showing any brain activity but doctors say they have not given up on her.
