A petition to remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2 has so far reached over 4 million signatures as she faces off against ex-husband Johnny Depp in court.
Depp, 58, has brought the $50million (£39million) defamation lawsuit after claiming Heard’s accusations of abuse against him are false. Heard is countersuing for $100m.
The trial, which has been going on for 12 days, is expected to last around seven weeks after Depp alleged that Heard lied about being a victim of domestic abuse and implied he was the abuser in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed about domestic violence.
Depp also claimed that Heard had abused him throughout their 15-month romance and marriage.
Depp lost a lot of movie parts after losing a similar trial in the UK against Heard and News Group Newspapers (NGN), including Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts, which was replaced.
In light of the ongoing legal battle, fans have started a petition to have Heard removed from Aquaman 2, in which she plays the titular hero’s love interest Mera.
According to the New York Post, Heard’s Precision Strategies PR team was fired on April 28 due to negative coverage.
“She doesn’t like bad headlines,” a source told the news outlet. Another person said the actress is “frustrated with her story not being told effectively.” With Heard expected to take the stand over the coming weeks, days even, it’s believed she has hired Shane Communications on retainer.
The petition calling for Heard to be removed from Aquaman 2 has reached 3-million signatures and counting.
The Change.org petition reads: “Men are victims of domestic abuse, just like women. This must be recognized, and action must be taken to prevent a known abuser from being celebrated within the entertainment industry. Do the right thing. Remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2.”
James Wan’s DC sequel concluded filming in January and is expected to hit theaters in March 2023.
Since the couple divorced in 2017, the organizers claim that Heard “has aggressively crusaded to discredit Depp in Hollywood.”
The petition had started to gain traction in November 2020, reaching 1.5million signatures after Depp left the Fantastic Beasts and was replaced with Mads Mikkelsen.
Depp had resigned from the franchise after losing a libel case with The Sun over a 2018 article that called him a ‘wife beater’.
