A man who authorities identified as Franco Luis Ferrada Roman attempted to commit suicide by stripping off all his clothes and jumping into the lion enclosure at the Santiago zoo. Onlookers were horrified as they watched the carnage unfold when the lions immediately pounced on the man and began biting.
ZOO DIRECTOR, ALEJANDRA MONTALVA SAID “HE TRESPASSED INTO AN AREA WHERE THE PUBLIC ARE NOT NORMALLY ALLOWED AND WE UNDERSTAND THAT HE FORCED THE ROOF OF THE LION’S ENCLOSURE. IT WAS FROM THERE THAT HE JUMPED, TOOK OFF HIS CLOTHES AND STARTED TO ATTRACT THE LIONS.”
A father who was at the crowded park with his young son, told news channel Chilevision: “Everyone started screaming when they saw him.” Another eyewitness said that the man kept shouting things about Jesus as he was being mauled. A suicide note found among the man’s clothes stated that his main reason for attempting to kill himself was his belief of an impending apocalypse.
Unfortunately, the lions had to be put down in an attempt to save this man’s life who didn’t want to live anymore. Dr. Sebastian Ugarde of Indias Clinic said that Mr. Ferrada Roman’s heart almost stopped. He suffered several injuries including head trauma and a broken pelvis. He is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.

It is truly a shame that the lions had to be destroyed. Had the man fallen or been pushed into the lions’ lair, it would certainly be a different story.
