The city of Los Angeles is forming a task force to address an increase in retail theft, which includes coordinated smash-and-grab robberies involving huge gangs of offenders.
Mayor Karen Bass, the LAPD, and numerous other law enforcement agencies unveiled the Organized Retail Crimes Task Force on Thursday, following a hectic week that witnessed two smash-and-grab robberies by big groups in the Los Angeles area.
A gang of nearly 50 people dressed in hoodies and masks stole up to $100,000 in luxury products from a Nordstrom in Los Angeles over the weekend. The burglars also used bear mace to harm security guards.
A group of 30 to 40 burglars looted a Yves Saint Laurent store in southern California last week in broad daylight on Tuesday, fleeing with an estimated $300,000 in items, according to authorities.
Footage from the event shows a dozen people, most of them dressed in dark clothing, hoods, and masks, sprint inside the store and then flee with their arms full of the expensive stuff.
The daring smash-and-grab heist was captured on tape shortly before 5 p.m. The store is in Glendale, just north of Los Angeles, at the Americana at Brand Mall. The Glendale police chief announced the task group alongside Los Angeles officials.
The first suspect in the crime was apprehended by police on Thursday. A 23-year-old male was charged with conspiracy, burglary, grand theft, and organized retail theft.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said Thursday, “What we’ve seen over just the past week in the City of Los Angeles and in surrounding regions is unacceptable, which is why today we are here announcing action.”
“These are not victimless crimes – especially in the case where Angelenos were attacked – through force or fear – as they did their jobs or ran errands,” she said, adding that the task force will “aggressively investigate” these incidents and hold the perpetrators “fully accountable.”
Retail theft, according to LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi, impacts not only businesses monetarily, but also the “overall well-being of our community.”
“Together, we can create an environment where our streets and businesses are safe from the scourge of retail theft,” Choi said.
In recent months, Los Angeles has been beset by rampant retail and personal theft.
According to police data, most types of violent crime in Los Angeles are down except theft, which is up 15% to more than 20,409 thefts compared to this time last year.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, at least 170 coordinated retail thefts, including the smash-and-grab trend, have occurred in Los Angeles County since the fall of 2021.
Late last month, authorities said that another gang of masked robbers stole $900,000 in jewelry from a jewelry store in Irvine, just south of Los Angeles and Glendale.
Nationally, organized retail theft is also on the rise.
According to the National Retail Federation, incidents like the ones in Los Angeles will grow by around 27% in 2021.
New York, Houston, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, and Dallas are among the top ten cities in terms of retail crime.
Critics claim that the criminals are emboldened by California’s progressive prosecutors, who rarely subject shoplifters to serious criminal penalties.
