Is Kevin McCarthy About To Lose Control Of The Gavel?

Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House, did not easily win the top Republican position in Congress.

It took a protracted series of votes and negotiations with the most conservative members to get McCarthy there after the Republican victory in the midterm elections.

It now appears that the battle over the debt ceiling may cost him the speaker’s gavel.

According to NBC News, McCarthy’s pact with President Joe Biden has upset House conservatives, who are considering using a parliamentary maneuver to try and get him removed.

Buck called the potential move “the elephant in the room,” according to NBC.

In a Twitter post on Monday night, Buck wrote that “We need real fiscal change in Washington. This bad deal isn’t the solution. It’s the opposite.”

According to NBC News, not all Republicans wanted to take extreme action like pushing a vote on McCarthy’s leadership.

But according to the newspaper, one lawmaker—whom it did not name—said several Republicans consider the budget agreement to be “a complete miss.”

“I’d say there are five or more who would be sympathetic to Buck’s position,” the lawmaker said.

A clause that would let a single member of the House to propose a motion to resign the speaker’s chair was one of the concessions McCarthy made during the days of back-and-forth that culminated in him obtaining the speakership in January.

CNN reported at the time that the point was “this is significant because it would make it much easier than it is currently to trigger what is effectively a no-confidence vote in the speaker. Conservatives pushed hard for this, while moderates are worried it will weaken McCarthy’s hand.”

It’s no secret that the McCarthy-Biden agreement displeased a lot of conservatives.

Almost immediately after it was revealed on Saturday, some people criticized the gift on social media.

In a Twitter post, Buck called it a:

“debt ceiling surrender” that is “completely unacceptable.”

Rep. Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, responded to a Twitter user’s plea to stop the bill from being passed in the House with a one-sentence statement.

“We’re going to try,” he wrote.

Washington and the rest of the nation must now decide if Roy, Buck, and their conservative colleagues will exert enough pressure to cause the deal to fail and cost Kevin McCarthy his position as speaker in addition.
