According to Newport News police and school officials, a 6-year-old boy shot and critically injured a Virginia teacher during a fight inside a first-grade classroom on Friday.
There were no casualties among the students at Richneck Elementary School, according to police. The 30-year-old female teacher suffered life-threatening injuries. According to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew, her condition had improved somewhat by late afternoon.
When it was discovered that the student had a firearm in the classroom, police took him into custody.
“There was no circumstance where someone was evading the school shooting,” Drew said. “There was an incident in which a gunshot was fired in a specific location.”
He went on to say that the shooting was not an accident.
Parents and students were reunited at a gymnasium door, according to Newport News Public Schools on Facebook.
