A man went home to Florida after a seven-month trip to New Zealand to discover a man squatting on his property.
An unidentified Ocala, Florida resident returned to his property on Friday after being absent for seven months only to discover it had been broken into and wrecked. It was obvious that someone had been residing there while he was away.
To attempt and catch the suspected squatter personally, the homeowner chose to spend the night in a closet.
At around 8 a.m., he was awakened by his house alarm going off and a man peering into the closet he was in.
Ze’Moye Brown, a 26-year-old suspected squatter, called the police and claimed that he had been shot and that he was the owner of the home he was occupying.
Sheriff’s deputies found Brown and arrested him.
In his interview with the police, Brown stated that he had only been residing in the house for “a few months” and that it had been abandoned for three years. Additionally, he asserted that the house’s windows and doors were unlocked when he arrived and denied removing the goods the home’s owner reported stolen.
Brown was charged with misdemeanor trespassing by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office despite his insistence that the residence belonged to him.
Ocala News claims that Brown initially informed officials that he was from Mississippi, did not know his social security number, and went by the name “Jack Barnes.”
The alleged squatter has a long criminal history that dates back to 2014. He was taken into custody on trespassing, grand larceny, and resisting an officer’s grounds.
The current bond for Brown is $4,000.
