Even though the GOP primary season is still very young, a clear frontrunner has already emerged from the pack.
Despite the fact that it is still early, Donald Trump’s nomination is one that he must lose.
Given this, there are few roles more alluring or promising than serving as Trump’s vice president for any Republican with sincere political ambitions.
However, the gregarious former president has been conspicuously silent on all issues pertaining to a potential new No. 2, leaving many with no choice but to conjecture.
According to the most recent round of rumors, the feisty and outspoken Kari Lake might be competing for that coveted position.
For those who are unfamiliar, Lake originally entered politics as a fiery contender for governor of Arizona (a contest she still claims was stolen from her), following a successful career working local broadcast Arizona news.
After eventually getting bored of the mainstream media environment, Lake gravitated into politics like a fish to water and, despite having no prior political background, became a force to be reckoned with as a gubernatorial candidate.
Regardless of how much mileage you may derive from claims that an election was stolen, it is undeniable that Lake’s first step into politics demonstrated her competitiveness.
And it appears that she will be the next vice president of the United States thanks to the same tenacity and perseverance that made her such a strong gubernatorial candidate.
In a report published by People magazine on Thursday, Lake is said to be “practically” residing at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
It’s important to note that Lake has been a prominent and early supporter of the previous presidency.
“Kari Lake is there all the time,” an unnamed source told People. “There’s a suite there that she practically lives in.”
Lake’s team is denying that there’s anything to these rumors, however.
“Kari Lake often speaks at events all over the country in support of America First candidates and organizations; and when she does have the honor of being invited to speak at the beautiful Mar-a-Lago, she overnights at Hilton properties in Palm Beach with her loving husband of 25 years,” a statement from a Lake adviser to People read.
The tense response from Team Lake (which mentioned “her loving husband of 25 years”) appeared to be related to the story by People’s overall ominous tone.
The entire article is written as if there is a strange relationship developing between Trump and Lake, with assertions that Lake spends more time at Mar-a-Lago than Melania Trump, Trump’s third wife.
Although the article’s tone is the usual lefty shit one has come to expect in 2023, the prospect of a Lake VP run is undoubtedly intriguing.
In addition, unlike the reserved Pence, Lake doesn’t hesitate to express her opinions in the most direct way imaginable. For many of her most passionate followers, “holding back” is not necessarily one of Lake’s strong suits.
Additionally, Lake offers Trump a few particularly advantageous benefits, such as may be assisting the former president with Arizona (an increasingly purple battleground state) and with suburban women voters.
Of course, Lake’s name has been mentioned as a prospective vice presidential candidate before.
In March, Axios reported that Trump might choose Lake as one of four women to serve as his vice president in 2024, with one intriguing qualification: Lake might be too famous to serve in that capacity.
“[Trump] wants no risk that his running mate could outshine him,” Axios reported in March. “Lake would be assumed to be angling for president from the day she entered the White House.”
Although the former president has not yet formally nominated a vice president, Lake appears to be the front-runner to win the GOP candidacy for president, much like he is for the GOP nomination for president.
