A Detroit area physician faces federal charges for allegedly performing female genital mutilation on multiple 6- to 7-year-old girls as part of a religious and cultural practice at a medical clinic in Livonia.
Doctors go to school to learn how to help people. They take an oath saying they will ‘do no harm.’ Some doctors don’t seem to understand what that means. Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, of Northville, Michigan has been arraigned after performing illegal surgeries – on children. Two 7-year-old girls were the victims.
They both had genital mutilation procedures done by Nagarwala. Nargawala’s attorney said that she had removed the membrane from the girls and gave it to their parents as part of a religious practice. The U.S. attorney stated that Nargawala knew the procedure was illegal, but went ahead and performed the procedure. This is the first case of its kind in the United States.
Mutilation of female genitalia is performed in 30 countries around the world. Nargawala could get ten years to life in prison. She also faces charges of lying to a federal agent and intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
