In some states it’s easy to know who the richest person is. For instance Washington is Bill Gates. Michael “Big Gulp” Bloomberg rules New York State. Texas and Arkansas is the Walton family. But most other states you couldn’t begin to guess.
For the third year running, Forbes magazine has compiled a list of the richest American in each of the 50 states.
The list names 52 people (Alaska and Delaware had ties) who have amassed their fortunes in 16 different industries.
America’s wealthiest family, the Waltons, who founded WalMart, have one member living in Texas (Alice Walton) and another in Arkansas (Jim Walton).
Alice Walton is worth $38.2 billion while her brother, Jim Walton, is said to be worth $38.5 billion.
Their father, Sam Walton, founded Wal-Mart in 1962.
The richest person in the world – Microsoft founder Bill Gates – resides in Washington state.
The ‘poorest’ of the group if Leonard Hyde and Jonathan Rubini, two real estate magnates who live in Alaska.
The two men each have a net worth of $340million, according to Forbes.
The business publication also breaks down the industry sectors that have produced the largest fortunes in each state.
Not surprisingly, technology was the leading wealth-generator in four states – Washington, California, Hawaii and North Carolina.
The most recognizable names on the list include the second-wealthiest man in the world behind Gates – Omaha, Nebraska’s own Warren Buffett.
The Berkshire Hathaway CEO has a net worth of $76.2billion, according to Forbes.
Oregon’s wealthiest resident is Nike co-founder and chairman emeritus Phil Knight.
Knight’s fortune has been pegged by Forbes at $25.1billion.
