As of this time in the 2024 nomination process, according to a new survey released after former GOP president Donald Trump was indicted last week, he has an “insurmountable” lead.
In the Republican presidential primary, the I&I/TIPP survey released on Monday found that Trump had 55 percent of the vote, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had 19 percent, and there was a 36-point gap between the two.
The next closest candidates are former vice president Mike Pence, who formally announced his candidacy last week, with 6 percent of the vote, and senators Tim Scott and Nikki Haley, both of South Carolina, with 3 percent apiece.

“So Trump’s edge, when it comes to his own party, again appears insurmountable at this early stage of the nominating process,” Terry Jones, editor of “Issues and Insights,” argued in a piece reporting the results.
Between May 31 and June 2, 1,230 voters nationwide participated in an online survey with a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points.
Prior to Trump’s federal indictment on allegations of improper handling of confidential documents and Pence’s official entry into the campaign, the survey was completed.
The 45th president’s support is likely to remain the same or increase, though, given the rally-to-the-flag effect on view when Trump’s polling support among Republicans surged after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged him in late March on claims of falsifying company records.
In keeping with the findings of the I&I/TIPP poll, the RealClearPolitics polling average on Monday showed Trump leading DeSantis by 33 percentage points.
Looking back at the RCP average’s constituent polls, several of them showed Trump to have single-digit or low double-digit advantages during most of March.
However, as soon as Bragg’s March 31 indictment was made public, Trump’s lead grew to almost 30 percentage points or more in most surveys.
In the RCP average, Trump has a 1.8 percent edge over President Joe Biden.
Speaking at the weekend Georgia Republican Party conference, Trump referred to the Department of Justice’s 37-count indictment as a “joke” and a “horrible thing for this country.”
“I mean, the only good thing about it is it’s driven my poll numbers way up. Can you believe this?” Trump asked.
He argued if he were not doing so well in the polls, “There’d be no witch hunt. There’d be no indictment.”
