Larry Nassar, a convicted child molester, and former U.S. gymnastics doctor, reportedly suffered several stab wounds on Sunday evening in a federal prison in Florida.
The extent of Nassar’s injuries is unknown, but he is currently in stable condition, according to sources who spoke to the Associated Press and ABC News about a confrontation at the United States Penitentiary Coleman.

One source claims that Nassar was stabbed in the back and the chest. Staffing issues existed at the prison where the famed doctor was housed, and according to a source with knowledge of the situation, the police assigned to Nassar’s area were required to work required overtime shifts.
More than 150 women and girls accused Nassar of sexually abusing them over the course of 20 years, and he will spend the rest of his life in federal prison. Nassar treated some of the most well-known members of the American women’s Olympic gymnastics team.
The former physician who practiced at Michigan State University acknowledged abusing females while he was a doctor. 156 victims testified against Nassar in court, including well-known athletes like Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and McKayla Maroney. Rachael Denhollander was the first to come out in 2016 and explain Nassar’s misdeeds.
The FBI was sued for $1 billion last year by almost 90 of the women who were molested by Nassar, including gold medalist Biles, for failing to stop Nassar.
The Department of Justice stated that FBI agents were aware of Nassar’s allegations of molesting gymnasts as early as 2015; nonetheless, they did nothing to stop him from continuing his abuse of the girls and young women he saw while working for the USA Gymnastics Team for more than a year.
In 2015, representatives of USA Gymnastics informed regional FBI agents of three gymnasts’ allegations that Nassar had abused them while working as the team doctor.
But according to the inspector general of the DOJ, Michael Horowitz, the FBI did not launch a formal investigation or alert federal or state authorities in Michigan, where Nassar worked at Michigan State University.
A year later, agents in Los Angeles started looking into Nassar for sexual tourism, but they also neglected to inform Michigan authorities, Horowitz found. In the course of a police investigation at Michigan State University, Nassar was ultimately taken into custody in late 2016.
The DOJ said last year that it would not pursue charges against the agents who botched the case against Nassar while admitting that the case was not “handled as it should have been.”
