San Pedro city police were called to the Vagabond Inn located on Gaffey Street approximately 7:30 p.m. Last night. When officers arrived they found that a 20 year-old driver had found a novel way to wash his vehicle. Officers said the subject drove his SUV through a fence and into the motels swimming pool.
As a result of the accident, seven people who were in the pool area at the time of the incident sustained minor injuries according to officers investigating the crash. The victims included several children according to local news affiliate, KTTV. Meanwhile, station KABC reported, it appeared the driver, who has not been identified, lost control of the vehicle, crashed through a brick wall before finally coming to rest laying on its side at the bottom of the motels swimming pool.
Witnesses said the driver appeared to be the only occupant in the car at the time, but several children between the ages 6 and 10 were in the pool as the vehicle ended its wild ride coming to rest in the pool. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told NBC Los Angeles “All others were in the pool area and are now being evaluated at the scene for apparent minor injury,”
Police said that the driver was rescued from the vehicle and everyone was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Later, a hospital spokesperson said that none of the victims had received anything other than minor injuries, but several of the children were traumatized by the event. The driver was admitted to the hospital and listed in critical condition.
Investigators said it is unclear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. As yet he has been unable to make a statement, but he is being investigated for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.
