Band Teacher Admits To Having Oral Sex With Male Student

A band teacher in Lake County Florida has admitted to having almost daily oral sex with a male student who was either 16 or 17 at the time in the closet of the band room.  The student said they had a relationship for a year before it became physical and that they would have oral sex almost every school day at first and then it slowed down to a couple of times a week before the affair ended in May.

Jon North, 32, was arrested at his home in Minneola and was charged with unlawful sexual activity with minors. His bond was set at $5,000.

Lake County School District officials alerted sheriff’s investigators on Tuesday that they had learned of a sexual relationship between North and a male student. Principal Linda Shepherd-Miller interviewed the teen, who admitted having sex with North repeatedly between late 2015 and May 2016. Shepherd-Miller then interviewed North, who reportedly confessed to the relationship and resigned his position.

A sheriff’s detective then interviewed the teen, who said the relationship began with benign texting but then progressed to hugging and kissing and then oral sex in December 2015 or January 2016. The encounters, which always took place in a corner of the band room closet at the school, gradually increased in frequency until they were occurring almost every weekday for about a month. Then they decreased to a couple of times a week and finally stopped completely in May of 2016.

The detective then interviewed North, who admitted to the relationship. Like the teen, North reportedly told the detective that the relationship began with texting and that it progressed to sexual encounters.

North reportedly told the investigator that he stopped when he realized it was wrong. He also admitted to a previous sexual “situation” with another former student but said the student was 18 at the time.

School District spokeswoman Sherri Owens said North was hired as a music teacher at East Ridge High in 2008 and transferred to Lake Minneola High when that school opened in 2011. He had no disciplinary problems during his tenure, she said.

North is currently free after posting $25,000 in bail money.
