A two-year-old was unresponsive and suffered serious brain injuries after her 16-year-old babysitter allegedly ‘disciplined’ her.
The 16-year-old baby sitter called 911 and toddler Gia Faye was found by medical personnel to be unconscious with suspicious injuries, KTXL reports.
The teen was baby-sitting the toddler and three other children, ranging in age from infancy to 5 years old, Yuba County officials said.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s office was called to the home and deputies arrested the teen on suspicion of felony child abuse. He also had an outstanding warrant in Sacramento County, for which he was booked.
In his initial interview with authorities, the baby sitter said the toddler’s head injury was caused when he was “attempting to discipline” the girl.
According to a GoFundMe page setup by Jessica Lamar to assist with travel expenses to and from the hospital where her daughter, Gia, is being treated, the toddler is in critical condition “after being severely hit in the head.”
Lamar’s car reportedly broke down, so she needs help paying for transportation to the hospital.
The brain surgery the child underwent took three hours, and Gia flatlined on her way in to surgery, requiring CPR to be administered.
In an update on the GoFundMe page, Gia’s mother states that the teen has confessed to “slamming” Gia “against the wall for allegedly sneaking candy and there was significant time [lapse] from when he called me and I called 911 to when he called 911.”
“My 5 year old saw and said he was [striking] her with a towel tryin to wake her up. It’s unexplainable how I feel but PLEASEĀ be careful when u let watch ur children,” the update continues.
The fund has raised $1,350 of its $3,000 goal in four days.
Gia was born 10 weeks early at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, according to KTXL. It is the same hospital where she is recovering from surgery now.
The toddler’s mother said she fought for her life when she was born and that she will do it again.
Lamar told KTXL that she forgives the teen who injured her daughter and that she trusted him immensely. He was living with her family because his family had kicked him out. She found him to be good with her six children and believes he is a “good kid” who happened to make a big mistake.
The teen has been booked into juvenile detention.
