An 83-Year-Old Grandma Helped Them Find Work, Here’s How Her Kindness Was Repaid

Five people have been arrested in connection with the assault of an 83-year-old great-grandmother.

Deputies in Meriwether County, Georgia, arrested Justin Grady, 38, Cortavios Heard, 18, and a 17-year-old. Two days later, two more 17-year-old suspects were also arrested.

All five suspects have been charged with a range of crimes, including attempted murder, armed robbery, attempted arson and burglary. It is not clear if the three 17-year-olds were charged as adults.

The attack occurred when the suspects reportedly entered the home of Dorothy Dow and demanded money from her.

“These suspects began to demand money from Miss Dow,” Sheriff Chuck Smith said, according to WSB-TV. “She pleaded with them that she didn’t have any money. They began to brutally beat her.”

Dow was left with two broken arms and broken fingers, as well as cuts and bruises to her face.

“After they beat her and she didn’t have any money they went out of the house,” said Dorothy’s daughter-in-law, Beth Dow.

But the suspects returned to her residence.

“She thought they were through, that she had just survived the worst beating of her life, and then they came back in and poured lighter fluid on her and [threw] a match at her,” Beth said.

Despite her injuries, Dorothy, who has COPD, managed to put out the flames.

“She remembered she had a gallon of water she filled her breathing machine with,” Beth said. “With those broken hands, she took that top off the gallon of water and poured it on her head to put out the flames.”

After reaching her cellphone and calling 911, Dorothy was taken to the hospital where she was put on life support. Doctors have operated on her several times and are treating her for third-degree burns. Her current condition has not been reported.

Two of the suspects, Grady and Heard, had previously been hired to pick blueberries on Dorothy’s property, according to WFLD.

All five suspects were reportedly involved in a burglary at Dorothy’s home two days before the attack.
