Amazing New Discoveries Reveal What Life Was Like In Pompeii Before The Volcano…

A selection of household items and furniture excavated by archaeologists reveals the lifestyle of the roman middle-class in Pompeii.

In the present-day community of Pompeii, close to Naples in the Italian region of Campania, there once stood the Roman city of Pompeii. During the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other villas in the neighborhood were submerged under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice.

Archaeologists have discovered new rooms during excavations at the lararium in the so-called Regio V, a northern section of Pompeii, where they have been able to make plaster replicas of the spaces left by furniture and other domestic items in a Roman domus.

The team has determined that one of the rooms is a bedroom. In this room, they have discovered a bed with some of the frames still intact, a trunk containing a saucer and a double-spouted oil lamp showing Zeus changing into an eagle, and the outline of a pillow with the fabric’s texture still discernible.

A circular table with a ceramic cup, a glass saucer, two glass cruets, another glass cruet, and numerous jugs and amphorae are placed next to the bed.

The team discovered a 2-meter-tall wooden wardrobe or cabinet outdoors in an adjacent corridor that houses jugs, amphorae, and glass plates. Another room looks to be a storage room or warehouse used for storing amphorae.

Wax tablets, a perfume burner in the shape of a cradle, and a sizable cupboard for ceramic and glass goods were discovered on an upper floor that has since collapsed into the lower floors.

Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Archaeological Park, stated in a press statement regarding the objects found:

“In the Roman Empire there was an ample chunk of the population that struggled with their social status and for whom daily bread was anything but a given. A vulnerable class during political crises and food shortages, but also ambitious about climbing the social ladder.”
