A federal grand jury has charged and detained Rep. George Santos (R-NY) on 13 counts of campaign finance fraud as well as other offenses like making false statements to Congress and embezzlement of public funds.
Santos turned himself into the police on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press, and he is scheduled to appear in court today afternoon.
U.S. Attorney Breon Peace told the outlet that the indictment “seeks to hold Santos accountable for various alleged fraudulent schemes and brazen misrepresentations.”
Fox News reports that Santos has been charged with seven charges of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of stealing from the government, and two counts of giving the House of Representatives materially false information.

The rookie congressman is also accused of lying to contributors when he said that donations would go toward his campaign. Instead, it is alleged that the funds were lavishly spent on goods unrelated to his bid for office, including expensive clothing, debt relief, and other luxuries.
“Taken together, the allegations in the indictment charge Santos with relying on repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the halls of Congress and enrich himself.” Peace said. “He used political contributions to line his pockets, unlawfully applied for unemployment benefits that should have gone to New Yorkers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic, and lied to the House of Representatives”
According to ABC News, Santos is allegedly planning to enter a not-guilty plea.
