According to WKBN, a truck transporting 20 tons of poisonous dirt from the site of the train crash in East Palestine, Ohio, made it about four miles before overturning and spilling roughly half of it.
The collision happened just before 1:00 p.m. on State Route 165 in Columbiana County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, when the truck drove off the road and into the ditch.
The truck then collided with a utility pole and slid onto its right side.
Phillip Falck, the truck’s 74-year-old driver, was just slightly injured.
According to WKBN, officers cited Falck for operating a vehicle without reasonable control.
The derailment spilled or burned off harmful chemicals, causing evacuations and pollution fears among people leery of the state and federal response.
Since the derailment, the government has “mobilized a robust, multi-agency effort to support the people of East Palestine, Ohio,” according to a statement.
On Feb. 16, nearly two weeks after the disaster, Michael Regan, the chief of the Environmental Protection Agency, visited the scene and strolled down a creek that still smelled of chemicals, attempting to persuade suspicious people that the water is safe to drink and the air is safe to breathe.
“I’m asking they trust the government,” Regan said. “I know that’s hard. We know there’s a lack of trust.”
He said officials are “testing for everything that was on that train.”
No other Cabinet member had visited the small community near the Pennsylvania border in the two weeks following the disaster. However, administration officials emphasized that their response was prompt and successful.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who has drawn criticism from lawmakers and the mayor of East Palestine for failing to visit the site, stated that the incident in Ohio was just one of the dozens that occur each year.
