The second letter of the apostle Paul to Timothy sums up the spiritual decline of many churches in the West today, which regrettably embrace false theology and blatant blasphemy.
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths,” he wrote in 2 Timothy 4:3-4.
The topic of this week’s sermon by Pastor Alistair Begg, which addressed the shortcomings of contemporary Christian professors who have lost their respect for and convictions about God’s Word, went viral.
Indeed, many “pastors” and “teachers” have become well-known for undermining the authority of God’s Word and twisting it to support sinful behaviors like homosexuality.
Former popular mega-church pastor Rob Bell said in a 2013 interview, “I am for marriage. I am for fidelity. I am for love, whether it’s a man and woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and a man. I think the ship has sailed and I think the church needs — I think this is the world we are living in and we need to affirm people wherever they are.”
“I think we are witnessing the death of a particular subculture that doesn’t work,” he said, in reference to Christians who hold true to God’s Word regarding homosexuality.
Bell also told Oprah Winfrey in a separate 2013 interview that “the church will continue to be even more irrelevant when it quotes letters from 2,000 years ago as their best defense.”
It is refreshing, then, to see uncompromising pastors speak passionately in defense of the Word.
