On July 5, 2017, Kayla Unbehaun, then just 9 years old, was allegedly kidnapped by her non-custodial mother.
In contrast, her mother, Heather Unbehaun, was detained and released from the Buncombe County Detention Facility on Tuesday after posting a $250,000 bond, according to WLOS.
Kayla, who is 15 years old, has now been reunited with her family.
According to Today, Heather Unbehaun has been charged with child abduction, a Class 4 felony, for taking her own daughter after the father was given custody.
“If she’s convicted of that, she’d be looking at probation or one to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections,” Chris Nelson from the Kane County (Illinois) State’s Attorney’s Office told Today.

After being kidnapped in South Elgin, Illinois, Kayla was discovered safe in North Carolina, according to a tweet from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

When Kayla’s kidnapping was mentioned in the “roll call” of volume 3 episode 9 of the Netflix series “Unsolved Mysteries,” titled “Abducted by a Parent,” in November 2022, Kayla’s story once again got widespread notice.

Even though Kayla’s narrative wasn’t the major subject of the show, her picture appeared in a quick roll call at the conclusion. WTVD claimed that her image had been digitally aged.
A store clerk knew Kayla from “Unsolved Mysteries” and from her youth based on that program and informed her management about it.

Kayla was last spotted in Wheaton, Illinois, going to a parade with her mother, before she was reunited with her father. In a previous GoFundMe page that Kayla’s father had set up, it was said that “he was supposed to meet Heather Unbehuan on July 5 to pick up Kayla, but the two never arrived.” Today referred to that page.
“What’s most unusual is the ability to stay off the grid, if you will, for that period of time. Typically, we leave a technological bread crumb and those are usually very easy and quick to be tracked down. This was not,” said Asheville Police Department LT. Jonathan Brown according to WLOS.
Heather and Kayla stayed undetected for six years, and NCMEC Child Advocate Callahan Walsh said, “To see this child finally recover, reunited with her father after this many years, it’s incredible.”
In an NCMEC Facebook post, Kayla’s dad, Ryan, wrote, “I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe. I want to thank the South Elgin Police Department, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and all of the law enforcement agencies who assisted with her case.”
Ryan added, “We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”
