Trump Warns Public Schools Teaching the 1619 Project Curriculum Will Soon Lose Federal Funding

This morning President Trump said that public schools that teach the 1619 project as a core part of its history curriculum could soon stop getting federal dollars.

“Department of Education is looking at this. If so, they will not be funded,” the President tweeted

Via Fox News:

President Trump said Sunday that the Department of Education is examining the use of the New York Times Magazine’s 1619 Project in schools, and warned that institutions that teach this alternative narrative of American history could lose federal funding.

The project is based on the premise that American history began in 1619 — cited as the date African slaves arrived in Virginia — and that everything following this should be viewed through that lens. The Pulitzer Center released a school curriculum based on the project, and Trump responded to a tweet stating that California would be using it.

This is an excellent idea and one that is long overdue.

Public schools should teach basic skills and knowledge in an unbiased way and if they fail at that very simple task they should be defunded with the dollars then going to parents to help pay for private education or homeschooling.

The Spectator has more on exactly what the 1619 Project teaches and the implications:

The new “truth” being vetted on the progressive left is that the whole of American history stems from chattel slavery.

The Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, July Fourth — forget it. Everything we thought we knew about America is false. Slavery is the sun around which our national solar system spins. We have a new explanation of the American story, tailored to shame us in the face of white racism. America didn’t begin in 1776; it began in 1619, with the arrival of the first African slaves.

Our intellectual elite class is finally latching on. It remains for the rest of the country to catch up. Or so goes the new theme song, with lyrics crafted by the authors of the New York Times’ so-called “1619 Project.” The Times’ purpose — I am not exaggerating — is to effect national repentance through an altered understanding of slavery as our central experience.

The project’s keystone outrage is the assertion that the colonists threw off British rule so as to make the new world safe for human bondage.
