On Friday, the NFL punished five players for breaking the league’s policy on sports gambling.
For allegedly betting on games, the league suspended Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore, as well as Washington Commanders defensive end, Shaka Toney, for at least one year. The Lions swiftly released Cephus and Moore. Jameson Williams, a former Lions first-round choice, and fellow wide receiver Stanley Berryhill were also suspended for six games.
“The gambling policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, including players, prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility,” the NFL said in a statement. “A league review uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.”

Cephus, Moore, and Toney were all suspended indefinitely and will not be eligible to return until after the 2023 season. Meanwhile, Williams and Berryhill were suspended for six games for wagering on non-NFL games in an NFL facility. They are permitted to participate in offseason programs and the preseason; however, their suspensions will be imposed following final roster cuts.
Cephus and Moore were also released by the Lions on Friday. “These players made decisions that are inconsistent with our organizational values and violate league rules,” said Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes in a statement.
“We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately.”
“We are disappointed by the decision-making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward,” Holmes added.
The Commanders issued a statement stating that they had been informed of the ban and addressed all concerns to the league headquarters.
The Lions selected Williams with the 12th overall choice in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He missed the majority of his debut season due to a ruptured ACL sustained in the CFP National Championship in 2022. He returned for the final four games of the season, catching one pass for 41 yards and rushing once for 40.
The Lions selected Cephus in the fifth round out of Wisconsin. He appeared in 22 games and caught 37 passes for 568 yards and four touchdowns. He was on injured reserve for all three seasons, but he was expected to compete for a roster place this year.
Berryhill was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons in 2022. In 2022, he was a member of the Lions’ practice squad. Moore also spent 2022 on the Lions practice squad.

The Commanders selected Toney in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He appeared in 26 games over two seasons, recording 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The penalties come nearly a year after Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on NFL games in 2021. Ridley, according to rumors at the time, reportedly put multiple parlay bets for the Falcons to win while away from the team for his “mental health.” Ridley was later reinstated. This year, he joined the Jacksonville Jaguars.
