The Fort Worth police officers were just a few hours into their shift when they responded to what is considered the lowest priority 911 call.

It gets hot in Fort Worth, Texas that’s why when 95-year-old World War II veteran Julius Hatley called 911 after his air conditioning broke down, two officers were faced with a difficult situation — and what they chose to do is going viral.

The Blaze reports that officers William Margolis and Christopher Weir were dispatched to what was considered a low-priority call, and they discovered that there was no fixing the broken-down window unit. With the heat at 85 outside, the apartment would be stifling.

Hatley was in trouble, and the officers knew it. So they decided to take an action of their own accord to help out the veteran.

“I talked to my partner and I talked to the gentleman and said, ‘Look, we’re going to help you out. I’ll be back in just a little bit. I promise you,” Margolis said according to KDFW-TV.

Th officers left — directly to The Home Depot to get the man a new air conditioner. Officer Weir snapped a photo of his partner at the checkout counter. Weir shared the picture on social media. The kind gesture quickly spread online.

Although they needed help from an additional officer to get the unit in, they were happy to help the man out.

“This is what we do the job for,” said Weir according to KDFW-TV. “We don’t do it to issue citations and arrests, we do it to help people.

“We got to see some humanity today and makes all of us feel good.”

This wasn’t a high-profile, crime-solving instance of police showcasing their highly-trained skills, but this was important nonetheless.

The way cops are painted today, stories like these become more and more important.
