Person Hears Crying In Trunk Of Car At Walmart And Makes Terrible Discovery

RIVERDALE, Utah (ABC4 News) – A Weber County woman is accused of child abuse after allegedly leaving her two small children in the trunk of her car — while she shopped inside Walmart.

Police say it happened around 6 p.m. Thursday outside the Riverdale Walmart.

“I was shocked, I was shaken, and I was mad,” said Charity Maw, who was in the parking lot when she heard children pounding against the car trunk from the inside.

“The little girl’s voice. Just screaming, let me out! I’m scared,” added Maw.

Police say, Tori Castillo, 39, had gone inside the Walmart. And, according to witnesses, she had stuffed her kids — 2 and 5 years old — inside the windowless trunk of her Chevrolet sedan before walking into the store.

“It’s never right to lock a child inside of a vehicle, let alone a trunk of a vehicle. Obviously, there’s a lot of things that could go wrong,” said Lt. Casey Warren with Riverdale Police.

Witness Casey Maw says a woman who also heard the screaming knew how to get the trunk open from the inside. According to Maw, that woman talked the young children through opening the trunk by themselves by using the latch inside the trunk.

“And there’s two kids there, tears coming down their face. Balling. They were scared,” said Maw.

Castillo was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail. The kids, according to police, were released to their father. Police say the Department of Child and Family Services is also investigating.
