Military College Responds In Surprising Fashion After Cadet Refuses To Remove Hijab

Charleston, South Carolina, military school The Citadel denied a request from an incoming female Muslim student to be able to wear a hijab. Lt. Gen. John Rosa, the school’s president, confirmed the decision in a statement.

“The standardization of cadets in apparel, overall appearance, actions and privileges is essential to the learning goals and objectives of the college,” Rosa’s statement read. “This process reflects an initial relinquishing of self during which cadets learn the value of teamwork to function as a single unit.”

Rosa added that he hoped the student would choose to attend the school anyway despite their decision.

Many readers felt as though the student shouldn’t have requested to wear a hijab in the first place, and that she should have instead respected the traditions of the school.

“She doesn’t belong being a cadet in the US, LEAVE the country and go to one that shares your beliefs ! Oh, I forgot, you don’t have rights there, too bad,” one reader commented on Facebook. “If you know about the dress code and do not want to abide by the traditional dress code – Do not apply or attempt to attend the school. Go somewhere else – Shut up and move on!” another added.

“She knew the standards and rules before applying to the school –to bad go to another school,” another wrote.

Some readers felt as though someone with her religious views should not be allowed to join a school like the Citadel if they choose to practice it while attending.

“Our military will not change its laws for a Muslim. America is a Chrstian nation. They will never impose their religion on us, although that is what Obama wanted. We still have Christians who are as convicted as they are about our faith,” one reader commented. “Only ours is accepted of our own free will not forced upon us with threat of death. If more people were willing to speak out and defend our faith we would not have as big a problem with this arrogant conceited people. They would not be so eager to come here if we weren’t so enabling.”

“No special treatment! If you want to be there then follow the rules EVERYONE else does,” another reader wrote.

“Being selected to attend the Citadel is a PRIVILEGE, …..NOT A RIGHT! Therefore, each Cadets abides by the rules of the Citadel or DOES NOT ATTEND!” another wrote.
